How to Use Trees and Shrubs in Your Christmas Light Display

A beautiful Christmas light display does not have to cover every part of your property.
Sometimes the best-looking displays are the ones that are a little more selective. A clean roofline can establish the shape of the home, while the right trees and shrubs add depth, balance, and that extra bit of Christmas character.
The key is deciding what should stand out and what should stay in the background.
Start Your Christmas Light Display With the House
Before adding lights to every tree or bush in the yard, step back and look at the property as a whole.
Where is the front entrance? Which parts of the house naturally draw your eye? Are there trees or shrubs that frame the home or help lead your attention toward the front door?
The landscape should complement the house rather than compete with it. If the roofline is already the main feature of the display, a few carefully selected landscape elements may be all you need.
Choose One or Two Trees as Focal Points
A tree can completely change the look of a Christmas display, especially when it is positioned near the front of the property.
Instead of lighting every tree the same way, consider choosing one or two that deserve more attention. Wrapping the trunk of a deciduous tree with mini lights can highlight its natural shape, while an evergreen can become a strong Christmas focal point when the lighting follows the form of the tree.
A focal tree also gives the display somewhere for the eye to land without making the entire yard feel busy.

Use Shrubs to Add Depth, Not Clutter
Shrubs and hedges are useful because they sit lower than the roofline and trees. That allows them to fill the space between the house and the ground.
But that does not mean every shrub needs lights.
Lighting selected bushes, alternating groups, or emphasizing shrubs near the entrance can create a more intentional look. Mini lights work especially well because they can provide a softer layer of light without taking attention away from the main features of the display.
Think About Balance From One Side of the House to the Other
Christmas lighting usually looks better when the property feels visually balanced.
That does not mean both sides have to be identical. If there is a large tree on one side of the house, for example, lighting a group of shrubs or another landscape feature on the opposite side can help the overall display feel more complete.
This is where looking at the entire property matters more than deciding whether one individual bush needs lights.
Warm White or Color?
Both can work. The better choice depends on the look you want to create.
Warm white lighting tends to create a classic, elegant appearance and works especially well when the roofline, trees, and shrubs are intended to feel like one coordinated design.
Color can add personality and a more playful Christmas feeling. It can also work well as an accent rather than being used everywhere.
Whichever direction you choose, keeping the color choices intentional usually creates a cleaner result than mixing several unrelated styles throughout the property.
You Don't Have to Light Everything
One of the easiest mistakes to make with Christmas lighting is assuming that more lights automatically create a better display.
Sometimes leaving a few areas dark actually makes the illuminated areas stand out more.
A warm roofline, one beautifully wrapped tree, and a few selected shrubs can create a stronger impression than covering every available surface with lights.
The goal is not simply to add lights. It is to create a Christmas display that feels balanced when you pull up to the house.
Let the Property Guide the Design
Every home and landscape is different. Some properties have mature trees that naturally become the centerpiece. Others have smaller shrubs, columns, walkways, or architectural details that make more sense to emphasize.
That is part of what makes Christmas lighting fun. The same design does not have to be repeated from one house to the next.
At A Lit Noël, we look at the home and landscape together and build the display around the property and the look the customer wants to create.
Sometimes that means lighting a lot.
Sometimes it means knowing exactly where to stop.
